The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
Do you ever think about the thoughts you have and why you have them? Have you
ever wondered why you think the way you do? Are there ways in which to seek
peace with our constant thoughts and emotions. Michael Singer, in his book, The
Untethered Soul-The Journey Beyond Yourself, assists you in becoming self-aware
of your thoughts and feelings and working towards freeing yourself from the
constant mind chatter that is always up to creating some type of chaos. Once
mastered, it allows you to create freedom from fear and the voice inside your head.
Key Take Aways from The Untethered Soul
The shocking revelation is that our minds are always talking. Our minds never
stop. The mind is always creating scenarios, stories, resolutions, and at times
making us question ourselves, and possibly even doubt ourselves. Our minds
create so much commotion that it can turn something like a mole hill into a
mountain. Making a simple challenge an extraordinary one. Thoughts can erupt
fear, anxiety and even depression. These thoughts and emotions then begin to
affect our bodies, all because of our thoughts.
Singer takes you on a journey in which to discover who this voice is that is
continuously chatting away in your head. Who is this inner roommate we call our
thoughts?
He informs the reader of the importance of knowing oneself and how to decipher
that from our thoughts. He wants the reader to know that you can listen to what
your thoughts say to you, but you must understand that your thoughts don’t define
you.
Also, the importance of allowing yourself the ability to acknowledge challenges
that involve feelings such as fear and learning to let that energy pass through you,
and to let it go. Singer talks about the importance of becoming more aware of our
thoughts and finding peace in them so that we can become the best versions of
ourselves.
Singer’s concept of death is almost life affirming. He writes about how death is
what gives life meaning, and he suggests that we should reflect on this often. He
wants the reader to think about death when they are struggling with something.
Would this change the struggle for you? In some events, it did so for me.
Who Should Read This Book
Anyone who struggles with the constant chatter of their minds and struggles to
decipher their thoughts and why they’re thinking this way. Anyone that wants to
truly explore the relationship with their self and become more mindful with their
relationship with their thoughts. Finally, anyone that craves freedom from the
thoughts that challenge them.
Final Thoughts
I found this book by sheer chance a few years ago, and since I have shared it with
others, and now I am sharing it with you. Each time I have read it (and there have
been a few cycles of this book for me), I get something different from the pages of
Michael Singer’s spiritual self-help book. I highly recommend this book to anyone
who wants to know their self and their thoughts more.
I have heard it suggested that to truly grasp this book, is to read it first straight
through, then read it again, this time really allowing yourself to explore the
concepts along with discovering and/or rediscovering your relationship with your
thoughts.
