A Message to Survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month

As April 1st begins Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), I want to take this time to speak to survivors and encourage you to use these 30 days to focus on self care and acts of kindness and self-forgiveness.

I want you to know that you are not alone in this journey. There are countless individuals, myself included, who are here to offer support, understanding, and encouragement every step of the way. Whether you choose to seek professional help, confide in a trusted friend or family member, or simply take time for self-care, know that your healing process is valid and deserving of respect. It's a journey, and it's different for everyone. There will be good days and bad days, moments of progress and moments of setback. Be patient with yourself.

Your feelings are valid, and it's okay to feel whatever you're feeling right now. Whether it's anger, sadness, fear, confusion, or a mix of everything, it's all understandable. You did not deserve what happened to you, and nothing you did or didn't do justifies the actions of the perpetrator.

Above all, I want you to know that you are worthy of love, kindness, and compassion, and you deserve to reclaim your sense of safety and empowerment. You are not defined by what happened to you, and your worth as a person remains intact.
